COBA’s Gordon Smith and Jason Anderson to Walk in Georgia Southern’s Inaugural Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Event

Gordon Smith, director of MBA programs and Jason Anderson, area director of the Small Business Development Center will participate in the Georgia Southern inaugural Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, an event where men walk in high-heeled shoes to increase awareness about sexual violence.  The Walk will take place on Thursday, April 11 at the Russell Union Rotunda.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is a great opportunity for men to raise awareness in their community about the serious causes and effects of sexualized violence. The goals of the walk are to get people talking about the sexual violence happening in the Statesboro area, to help the victims and to figure out how to prevent these attacks. Organizers say it is important for men to join the cause, which is why Jason and Gordon are willing to walk the designated mile in their high-heels.  “Gender violence affects everyone. We all have a wife, daughter, sister or mother. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® helps raise awareness about a serious issue and supports efforts to address it,” according to Jason Anderson.

There is an old saying: “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® asks men to literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes. It’s not easy walking in these shoes, but it is a fun event and it gets students talking about a very difficult topic: gender relations and sexual violence. This event can change perspectives and lead to better gender relations; therefore, decreasing the potential for violence. “As faculty and staff we have a commitment to educate our students in more than textbook subjects. If walking in high heels helps bring gender violence into greater light then it is worth it,” said Gordon Smith.

The proceeds from this event will be donated to the Statesboro Regional Sexual Assault Center, which helps survivors of sexual assault in Bulloch, Jenkins and Screven counties.
